Lamb of God

At Mass, the priest holds up the Host, saying: “This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, happy are those who are called to His supper.” Why the “Lamb”?

In the bible, lambs were sacrificed in the temple to ask forgiveness of sins. Christians have no need to sacrifice animals to seek forgiveness. Jesus already did that for us, once and for all time as God’s perfect offering — the true sacrificial Lamb of God. He suffered, died and rose for the forgiveness of our sins and for our salvation.

Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. – John 1:29
